MDC Alliance Budiriro MP Costa Machingauta arrested over alleged rape

Opposition MDC Alliance Member of Parliament for Budiriro Costa Machingauta (46) was arrested last night on charges of rape, Nehanda Radio can reveal.

The ObserverZim heard from Nehanda Radio sources, that Machingauta is currently detained on DB 2416/21 at Harare Central Police Station charged with rape as defined in the Constitution Section 65 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act chapter 9:23.

Machingauta is accused of raping a 26 year old woman (name withheld). His case reference number is 298/04/21.

In an interview with Nehanda Radio, MDC Alliance national deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo confirmed the arrest but he had not gathered more information with regards to his apprehension.

Ths is not the first time Machingauta has faced rape chargegs.

In 2014 he was acquitted on charges of kidnapping and rape by Gweru regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire.

Machingauta had been accused of kidnapping and raping a fellow Midlands State University (MSU) student in May of that year.

But Nemadire ruled that the state failed to prove its case adding evidence given by the complainant and a witness who is a lecturer at MSU was unreliable.

The State represented by prosecutor Emmanuel Mathose argued that the MDC-T legislator, who was studying for a degree in local government, raped a student who was on the same programme at a Gweru hotel on 29 May.

The court heard that on the day of the attack, Machingauta took the complainant to the Midlands city’s Downtown Gardens where they allegedly met with friends and drank beer before they had supper.

The legislator and the complainant later proceeded to Midlands Hotel where he was booked and allegedly detained the complainant against her will.

Machingauta is said to have raped the student on two occasions overnight before releasing the complainant on the next morning.

The student then reported the matter at Gweru Central Police Station on 6 June leading to the arrest of Machingauta
