Price of bread goes up!

Bakers around the country have just dealt a heavy blow to consumers after they increased the price of bread to $3.50 per loaf from the previous price of $1.80 per loaf, an increment of 94%.

The new prices are with effect from Tuesday and some supermarkets in the capital are limiting the bread to only 1 loaf per customer. The move also comes as millers under the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) have warned of an impending rise in the price of mealie-meal, citing increased maize producer price as well as rising costs.

This increase comes at a time when state media is celebrating a paltry 29 per cent pay increase for civil servants which translated to less than RTGS$150 per month per person. Herald reports that it was a case of smiling all the way to the bank for civil servants yesterday as Government honoured its pledge to increase the workers’ salaries beginning this month.

But their joy was cut short after some businesses swiftly moved to increase prices of commodities, eroding their income in the process.

Nurses, prison officers, members of the Zimbabwe National Army, Zimbabwe Republic Police and Airforce of Zimbabwe started accessing their salaries yesterday with an increment of up to $129 depending on grades.

Those in the education sector will get their dues tomorrow while the rest of the civil service and pensioners are going to be paid on April 24 and 26 respectively.
