PIRATES DENT SIMBA BHORA’S HOME RECORD

By Innocent Muchochomi*

Chegutu Pirates football club coach Richard Chunga proved that sound sponsorship does not mean a team will always easily win games as his cash-strapped side inflicted a humiliating 1-0 defeat that dented financially muscular Simba Bhora’s chances of getting promoted to the Premier league.

Prior to this Northern Region Division One soccer league brawl played at Wadzanai Stadium in Shamva, Chunga had declared that hosting Simba Bhora were only better resourced but not better than Pirates. And this came to pass courtesy of a second half strike.

Versatile Simbarashe Domingo, who fluffed to score from the spot when Pirates drew 1-1 against Golden Eagles in Chakari last weekend, atoned with a good strike that ended Simba’s unbeaten home record.

An elated Chunga said Pirates had the underdog tag but at the end of the match their tails were waging in happiness for sweetly avenging how Simba battered them in the Axis Solutions Super 8 tournament during the midseason break.

“We did our corrections on how we lost in the tournament. I’m happy the boys showcased what we rehearsed and it yielded results,” Chunga said.

The shrewd Pirates gaffer added that he still stood by his earlier statement that his team were dark horses in the title race.

“In the early stages of the season, I said we are dark horses and other clubs did not take us seriously but our position on the log table speaks volumes.”

“We ain’t putting pressure on ourselves but if you look, this is our eighth league game without conceding a loss. Our hard work has made us be counted amongst the best and if God avails the chance to go to the elite Premier league, we will grab it,” said Chunga.
