Nyoni signs for CAPS United in statement of intent by Chitembwe

CAPS United showed serious intent on Thursday by signing Highlanders striker Gabriel Nyoni while renewing the contracts of half a dozen star players.

The 26-year-old Nyoni, who arrived on a free transfer, signed a three-year contract as he marked a return to the club he once featured for as a junior player.

United also secured the signature of star forward Ronald Chitiyo, whose contract with the club ran out at the end of last year. Chitiyo, who sat out the 2018 season following a road accident, committed his future to the club for the next three years.

On a busy day, club chiefs also handed a two-year deal to the returning Phineas Bhamusi who spent last season at Chibuku Super Cup winners, Triangle.

ZPC Kariba left-back Munyaradzi Kunyarimwe has joined on a three-year deal as United push to improve on last season’s eighth place finish – 30 points adrift of champions FC Platinum.

Goalkeeper Chris Mverechena put pen to paper on a three-year deal while striker John Zhuwawo will get an improved contract.

Midfielder Joel Ngodzo extended his contract by another year.

Club president Farai Jere and vice president Nhamo Tutisani personally oversaw the contract signings after persuading coach Lloyd Chitembwe to stay on.

Also extending their stay at the club are midfielder and Soccer Star of the Year finalist Joel Ngodzo, who inked a one-year deal, and goalkeeper Chris Mverechena who signed a three-year deal. Striker John Zhuwawo also committed himself to the club by renewing his contract.

Jere said: “We’re taking our preparations for the next season seriously. We want to see a better Caps United this term. We are good to go. We are only left with perhaps three or four players as we beef up.”

Tutisani said their focus was not just about winning silverware, but to create revenue streams for the club and also put more emphasis on developing their junior football structures.
