MDC Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora declared yesterday that he’s now only interested in retaining the Secretary-General position as the party’s Congress in May draws near.
He failed to get any nomination in his Manicaland home province.
Addressing a crowd with Nelson Chamisa at his side Mwonzora said that they had agreed that he would pursue the Secretary-General position while Chamisa would remain the president of the party.
“We also agreed that I will try to get the position of Secretary General of this party. Mr Chamisa here needs to finish what he started in his current position. I also want to finish what I started in my position.”
Mwonzora was widely speculated to be working to contest the position of President of MDC in the lead up to the Congress. Last weekend, however, Chamisa secured 6 nominations from the 6 provincial elections that had been held so far.
He had received endorsements from Zanu PF party which argued that he needed to take over MDC presidency because he was more ‘mature’ than Chamisa. However, Douglas chickened out of the race after Chamisa continued to bag nominations.
Mwonzora will be fighting it out with Charlton Hwende for the SG position.
